Squarespace multiple popups

Three pages, three offers.
Squarespace gives you one pop-up.

Squarespace lets you enable one promotional pop-up at a time, and it has no exit intent. It opens on a timer or a scroll depth, only on the first page a visitor lands on. To show a discount on your shop, a newsletter signup on your blog and a last offer as visitors leave, you add a popup tool through code injection, which needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan. Below: exactly what the native pop-up does, a planner that checks your popups for conflicts, and how Builderify popups cover the rest.

01 / The native pop-up

What Squarespace’s promotional pop-up can do,
and where it stops.

It is a good pop-up for one job: ask everyone who arrives to join your list, or send them to one page. It is on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans, not Basic, and it lives under Pages › Marketing Tools › Promotional Pop-Up (on a version 7.0 site, under Website Tools).

Show the Squarespace pop-up on specific pages

  1. 1 Open Pages › Marketing Tools › Promotional Pop-Up and choose a layout.
  2. 2 Under Action, choose Sign up for a newsletter or Click a button (up to two buttons).
  3. 3 Open Display & timing. Under Pages, choose Only certain pages and tick the pages, then click outside the menu.
  4. 4 Under Timing, set a delay, a scroll percentage, or both. Whichever happens first opens it.
  5. 5 Pick a Frequency for returning visitors, check or uncheck Show on mobile, switch Display pop-up on and save. Test it in a private window.

Ticking several pages does not give you several pop-ups. In Squarespace’s words, “the pages you select control which pages can trigger the pop-up, not how many times it appears”: it still shows only on the first page a visitor lands on.

02 / More than one?

Can you have more than one
pop-up on Squarespace?

Not natively. Squarespace’s help centre answers the question directly: you can only enable one pop-up at a time, and its suggestion for a second message is the announcement bar. That leaves three ways to get more than one.

A

Put the second message in the announcement bar

What you get

One line across the top of every page, on the same plans as the pop-up.

The catch

It shows on every page except cover pages and cannot be limited to some of them. It has no end date either; the guide to scheduling an announcement bar has free code for that.

B

Take turns with the one pop-up

What you get

Change the pop-up when the campaign changes, then click Reset so returning visitors see the new version.

The catch

Still one message for the whole site at any moment, and still only on the landing page, on a timer or a scroll.

C

Add a popup tool with code injection

What you get

Paste one script under Pages › Custom Code › Code Injection. Each popup then gets its own pages, trigger and audience.

The catch

Code injection needs Core, Plus, Advanced or some legacy plans, and Squarespace does not support code on checkout pages.

03 / Popup planner

Plan a popup for each page,
and check it before you build.

Write one row per popup: the pages, what it is for, who sees it and what opens it. The planner shows which rows Squarespace’s single pop-up could handle, and where your popups would trip over each other.

Popup plan Runs in your browser
  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
/about is one page, /shop/* everything under /shop/, * every page.

What Squarespace can do natively

1 of 3 rows
  1. 1
    Native pop-up

Fits the native pop-up: pick the pages under Only certain pages. It shows only on the first page a visitor lands on.

Builderify: Discount code popup, delay trigger, on /shop/*.

  2. 2
    Slot taken

Fits, but row 1 already has the one pop-up Squarespace allows.

Builderify: Newsletter Split template, delay trigger, on every page.

  3. 3
    Not native

No exit intent: it appears only when a visitor lands on a page.

Builderify: Exit Offer template, exit-intent trigger, on every page, desktop only.

Conflict check

2 found
  • Rows 1 and 2 both open after a delay on /shop/*, on every device. Exclude /shop/* from row 2, or give one of them a different trigger.

  • 3 popups can reach one visitor on /shop/* (desktop): rows 1, 2 and 3. Even shown one after another, that is 3 interruptions on one page. Keep it to one or two.

  • No conflicts: no two popups share a trigger on the same pages, and no page has more than two.

Announcements are left out of the conflict check: they belong in a bar across the top, not over the page.

04 / With Builderify

Multiple popups on Squarespace,
exit intent included.

Builderify’s popup builder gives each popup its own pages, trigger and audience, from 13 templates and 11 element types, in 3 layouts and 7 screen positions. It goes on Squarespace with one script tag.

  1. 01 Start free, add your website and copy the Builderify script tag.
  2. 02 In Squarespace, open Pages › Custom Code › Code Injection (Website Tools on version 7.0), paste the tag into Header and save.
  3. 03 Build each popup from a template, choose its trigger, then set its audience: device, new or returning visitors, referrer and a page rule.
  4. 04 Switch off Squarespace’s own pop-up, or add it to your plan as a row, so the two do not open together.

The number of popups does not change the bill: a page load is charged once, however many popups it carries. Every account gets 250 free credits a month; past that, one-time packs start at $9 and never expire. The full rate card is on the pricing page.

05 / How many is too many

How many popups per page
is too many?

More popups across the site is fine. More popups on one page is not. These are the rules the planner checks, and why.

The rule

One interruption per page.

Why

Give each page one popup that covers the content, and make anything else a corner card or a bar. A visitor who closes a discount and gets a newsletter straight after has learned to close things.

The rule

Match the offer to the page.

Why

A discount where people shop, a newsletter where they read, a last offer where they hesitate. A site-wide popup on top of a page-specific one is the most common clash; exclude the specific pages from the site-wide one.

The rule

Exit intent is for desktops.

Why

It watches for the cursor heading out of the top of the window. Phones have no cursor, so on mobile use a delay or a scroll depth instead.

The rule

Keep phones clear.

Why

Google says intrusive dialogs that obscure the page “may lead to poor search performance” and suggests banners that take up a small fraction of the screen. Squarespace’s pop-up fills half a phone screen for the same reason.

The rule

Do not ask twice.

Why

Use once per session, and stop asking people who already signed up. Squarespace’s “Don’t show again after newsletter signup” only counts signups made in the pop-up itself.

Questions

Squarespace popups, before you ask.

No. Squarespace lets you enable one promotional pop-up at a time, and its help centre suggests the announcement bar for a second message. To run several popups, each with its own pages and trigger, add a popup tool through code injection, which needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan.

Partly. In Display & timing, choose Only certain pages and tick the pages you want. The pop-up still appears only on the first page a visitor lands on, so someone who arrives on your homepage and then clicks through to the shop will not see it there.

No. Squarespace says its promotional pop-up appears only when a visitor lands on a page, after a delay, a scroll depth or both. For exit intent you need a tool added through code injection. Builderify's Exit intent trigger fires when the cursor heads for the top of the window.

Copy your Builderify script tag, then in Squarespace open Pages, Custom Code, Code Injection (Website Tools on version 7.0), paste it into Header and save. Code injection is available on the Core, Plus, Advanced and some legacy plans. Then build each popup from a template and give it its own trigger, page rule and audience.

There is no charge per popup. Page loads with the widget on them cost 10 credits per 1,000, each new lead a popup captures costs 1 credit, and every account gets 250 free credits a month. If you need more, one-time packs start at $9 and purchased credits never expire.
