Google Analytics alternative for small business
You wanted a speedometer.
GA4 handed you the cockpit.
The best Google Analytics alternative for a small business is the one that answers five questions with the least effort: how many people came, from where, which pages they read, whether they converted, and what changed. GA4 answers all five and far more, free, but it is built for analysts. Plausible, Fathom and Simple Analytics trade depth for one calm page without cookies, Microsoft Clarity adds free heatmaps and recordings, and Matomo can run on your own server. Below: when to keep GA4, every option compared, and a fit finder that prices each one at your traffic, Builderify User Journey included.

What should simple website analytics
actually tell you?
Five things, most weeks. If a tool answers these on one screen, it is doing the job. GA4 answers every one of them; it just files each answer under a name an analyst would choose.
-
01
How many people came?
Visitors this week, set against last week, so a number means something.
In GA4 it’s calledActive users -
02
Where did they come from?
Google, Instagram, a newsletter, a partner’s link. Named, not “referral”.
In GA4 it’s calledSession source / medium -
03
Which pages did they read?
The pages that bring people in, and the ones they leave from.
In GA4 it’s calledPage path and screen class -
04
Did they do the thing?
A booking, a sign-up, a sale. Usually: did they reach the thank-you page.
In GA4 it’s calledKey events -
05
What changed?
This week against last, so a spike or a dip has a cause you can find.
In GA4 it’s calledComparisons
Question four is the one most sites never set up, and it is the one that pays. If your thank-you page has its own address, you already have everything you need: the guide to tracking conversions by URL walks through it. Everything past these five, from audiences to attribution models, is real power. It is also optional.
Is GA4 too complicated,
or just too much?
Usually too much. GA4 is free at any traffic, deep enough to answer questions you have not thought of yet, and the only analytics tool that plugs straight into Google Ads. That depth is the point for an analyst and the problem for everyone else: the five answers are in there, spread across reports you have to know to look for.
It also uses cookies, which matters if you would rather keep your cookie notice short. More on that in section 05.

- Standard GA4 is free. Analytics 360 is the paid tier; Google publishes no price for it. Source
- 2 or 14 mo

- 2 years
- Lifetime of the _ga and _ga_<container-id> first-party cookies GA4 sets to tell users and sessions apart. Source

You buy Google Ads.
Keep GA4. Linking it to Google Ads shares key events and audiences between the two, and that is something none of the simpler tools here offer. For visitors in the EEA, Google expects consent signals through Consent Mode for ads features.
You compare this season with last season.
Keep GA4, or pick a simple tool with long retention. GA4’s standard reports keep your history; only Explorations are limited to the 2 or 14 months you choose.
Someone on your team writes SQL.
Keep GA4. The BigQuery export is available on free properties, so the raw events are yours to query.
You open it twice a year and leave confused.
Add or switch to something simpler. Plausible, Fathom and Simple Analytics put the five answers on one page. You can run one alongside GA4 rather than instead of it.
You want to watch what people do on a page.
Add Microsoft Clarity. Heatmaps and session recordings, free, and it integrates with GA4.
You want to follow one visitor from arrival to sign-up.
GA4 can, through User explorer in Explorations. Matomo shows a visitor profile, and Builderify User Journey gives every visitor a readable name and a page-by-page timeline.
Privacy-friendly analytics

** Simple Analytics’ free plan: unlimited page views under a fair-use policy, 5 websites, one month of history, a badge on your site, and no goals or events.
*** Matomo Cloud counts hits: page views plus events, downloads, outlinks and site searches. Matomo says that is typically 10–20% more than page views. Above 5 million hits a month its page asks you to get in touch.

Scores: a full point for each ticked item an option covers, half a point where it covers it partly. Ties go to the cheaper option. Prices are each vendor’s cheapest plan for your page views on monthly billing, in the currency its page shows; Matomo Cloud counts hits, so expect a tier up.
Builderify: 0.1 credits per new visitor plus 10 per 1,000 page loads, after 250 free credits a month. Anything over is shown as the cheapest one-time packs for a year of it, divided by twelve. See the pricing page.
Simple website analytics
with a name on every visitor.
User Journey answers the five questions by person rather than by session. Every visitor gets a readable label such as “Swift Falcon”, their country, device and traffic source, and a page-by-page timeline with the time spent on each page. The Insights view adds the totals, top, entry and exit pages, sources and goal completions for the last day, week or month.
-
Goals by URL
A goal is a page address plus a name, wildcards allowed. Reach /thank-you and it counts. The conversions-by-URL guide covers setting them up.
-
Bot, VPN and proxy flags
Proxy, VPN and hosting-provider traffic is flagged, not silently counted, so datacenter crawlers do not pass for customers.
-
Do Not Track
On by default: browsers that send it are not recorded.
-
Your retention
Keep journeys 7, 14 or 30 days. Older ones are deleted every night.
-
Exclude paths
Keep admin areas, staging routes and checkouts out, with wildcards like /admin/*.
-
Ignore query strings
On by default, so /pricing?utm_source=… still counts as /pricing.
What it does not do
- No heatmaps or session recordings. It records scroll depth and clicks per page; Clarity is free for the rest.
- No Google Ads integration. If you buy ads, keep GA4 for that.
- No year-on-year view. Journeys are kept for 30 days at most, by design.
When the numbers raise a question, A/B Testing answers it on the same script tag: change a headline in the visual editor and let the maths say whether it helped. It is one of 19 modules on the platform.
A Growth pack, 5,000 credits for $29, covers 14 months of that. Packs are one-time and never expire. A visitor is charged once, the first time Journey sees them; a returning visitor is not charged again while their record is kept. If your balance runs out, the widget pauses until you top up, and Journey with it.

The one that answers five questions with the least effort: how many people came, from where, which pages they read, whether they converted and what changed. Plausible, Fathom and Simple Analytics put those on one page without cookies, Microsoft Clarity adds free heatmaps and recordings, and Matomo can run on your own server. If you buy Google Ads, keep GA4 for that.
It is built for analysts, so the answers most small sites need are spread across reports with names like Session source / medium and Key events. It is still free at any traffic, keeps history in its standard reports and links to Google Ads. Many sites are better served by a simpler dashboard, either alongside GA4 or instead of it.
Not automatically. The UK ICO and the EU data protection board both say the rules cover any storage or access on a visitor's device, including local storage and fingerprinting, not only cookies. The UK now has a statistical-purposes exception with conditions. This is not legal advice, so check the guidance that applies to you.
No. User Journey sets no cookies. It keeps a visitor ID in the browser's local storage and the current visit in session storage, skips browsers that send Do Not Track by default, and deletes journeys after 7, 14 or 30 days, whichever you choose.
Each new visitor uses 0.1 credits and every 1,000 page loads use 10, out of the 250 free credits every account gets each month. At 10,000 page views and two pages per visitor that is 600 credits a month, so 350 to buy. One-time packs start at $9 and never expire, and there is no monthly fee.
