Add live chat to WordPress

Adding chat takes five minutes.
Answering it takes all week.

To add live chat to WordPress, install a chat tool’s own plugin (tawk.to, Tidio, Crisp and LiveChat each have one), paste the tool’s code into a snippets plugin such as WPCode, or use one plugin that loads several tools from a single tag, such as Builderify’s. Each takes minutes, and tawk.to, Tidio, Crisp and Builderify all start free. On WordPress.com you need a paid plan, Personal or above. Below: the steps for each route, what the free plans leave out, a finder that names the cheapest chat for your numbers, and what a chat script costs your page speed.

01 / Three ways

How do you add live chat to WordPress?
Three routes to one chat box.

Every chat tool ends up as a script on your pages. The routes differ in who puts it there, how you keep it up to date, and what else comes along. None of them needs you to touch your theme.

01 Plugins › Add New Plugin

The chat tool’s own plugin

Install tawk.to’s, Tidio’s, Crisp’s or LiveChat’s plugin from the WordPress.org directory and log in to your account from its settings screen. The plugin adds the chat code to every page.

Good for
One chat tool, nothing else on the page
Watch for
One plugin per tool, kept up to date by someone else. Check its Tested up to: Crisp’s stops at 6.8.11, while WordPress is on 7.1.3.
Costs
The tool’s own plans
02 Code Snippets › Header & Footer

Its code, in a snippets plugin

Copy the embed code from your chat tool and paste it into WPCode’s site-wide Footer box. It works with any chat tool that gives you a script, plugin or not.

Good for
A tool without a plugin, or a site already running WPCode
Watch for
You update the code by hand if the vendor changes it. Speed plugins that delay JavaScript can hold the chat back until the visitor scrolls or taps.
Costs
The tool’s own plans; WPCode is free

Live chat on WordPress without a plugin?

On a self-hosted site, yes: a few lines in a child theme’s functions.php print the chat code on every page, block themes included. It is in the install steps below, ready to copy. Never paste it into the parent theme, whose next update wipes it out.

One chat at a time

Two chat scripts mean two bubbles and two sets of cookies. Before you add a new one, remove the old plugin or snippet. Still carrying Facebook’s chat bubble? It stopped working in 2024; the Messenger chat plugin guide finds its leftover code. Every plugin is a cost of its own, which is what the WordPress plugin audit measures.

02 / WordPress.com

Can you add live chat to WordPress.com?
On any paid plan.

Yes, from the Personal plan up, but not on the free one. WordPress.com’s support pages say “installing plugins is available on all WordPress.com paid plans: Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce,” so you no longer need Business for a chat plugin. A chat tool’s code is a <script> tag, and WordPress.com allows those only on a plugin-enabled plan “with activated hosting features.”

This page is about WordPress itself, wherever it is hosted. On a self-hosted WordPress site, any of the three routes works with no plan to buy.

  1. 01

    Activate hosting features

Install any plugin from your dashboard’s Plugins screen. That one-time step activates hosting features. Your default address changes from example.wordpress.com to example.wpcomstaging.com, and the old one redirects to it.

  2. 02

    Add the chat

Then any route in this guide works. WordPress.com’s own instructions for code in the header use WPCode, under Code Snippets › Header & Footer, the same as on a self-hosted site.

  3. 03

    On the Free plan

No plugins and no script tags. A Button block that links to WhatsApp or Messenger is the closest you can get without upgrading.

Commerce $45/mo $70/mo Plugins and scripts

03 / Free plans

Which live chat for WordPress is free?
Four plugins, read closely.

tawk.to is the only one with no cap on people, chats or history. Tidio’s free plan stops at 50 conversations a month, Crisp’s at two seats, and LiveChat has no free plan at all. Every free plan shows the vendor’s logo. Read from each vendor’s own pages and the WordPress.org directory on 16 October 2026.

* tawk.to’s add-ons page says $29 a month to remove the branding; its help centre says $348 a year, or $39 billed monthly. WordPress itself is on 7.1.3.

** The same free credits pay for the widget’s page loads, at 10 per 1,000, so a site with 5,000 page loads a month has room for about 200 chats.

Two more with free chat

Brevo’s free plan includes live chat for one user, the account owner, with Brevo’s name on the chat. JivoChat’s free plan keeps two months of history; its pricing page says both “5 agents” and “up to 2”.

Nine plans, side by side

HubSpot, Zoho SalesIQ, Smartsupp and others are in the free live chat plans compared, with the fine print each one hides.

05 / Install

How to install live chat on WordPress,
step by step.

Pick the route that matches your setup. Whichever you choose, run one chat tool at a time: two scripts mean two bubbles, and if you are moving off an old chat, remove its plugin or snippet first.

With the Builderify plugin

One plugin for the chat and anything else you switch on in Builderify. It prints its tags through WordPress itself, so it works on classic and block themes and survives theme updates.

Good for: chat plus popups, a cookie banner or an AI chatbot

  1. Download the plugin

In Builderify, open Connect › Snippet and choose the WordPress tab. Download builderify.zip; the plugin isn’t in the WordPress.org directory yet.

  2. Upload and activate

In WordPress, go to Plugins › Add New Plugin › Upload Plugin, choose the file, then Install Now and Activate. It needs WordPress 6.2 or later and PHP 7.4 or later.

  3. Paste your site key

Open Settings › Builderify, paste the site key from the same tab (or the whole snippet) and save. The page says straight away whether Builderify recognises it. Leave Load the Builderify widget ticked.

  4. Add the chat and go online

In Builderify, add the Live Chat block to your Floating Bubble, write a welcome and an offline message, and choose whether to ask for a name and email. Then open Manage › Live Chat: while it is open, you are online.

The widget loads on every public page, never in wp-admin, and starts after the page has loaded. If your theme or a code plugin already holds a Builderify snippet, remove it so the widget doesn’t load twice. Developers can skip it on any request with the builderify_load_scripts filter.

06 / Page speed

Does live chat slow down WordPress?
It depends when its script starts.

A little, and timing matters more than the brand. A chat widget is third-party JavaScript: a download, a connection to the chat company’s servers and work on the browser’s main thread, on every page it’s on. Started early, it competes with your own content. Started once the page has loaded, visitors rarely notice it.

Four ways a chat script can start First paint Load event
Your page Chat script, in the way Chat script, out of the way
Illustration · not to scale; real timings depend on the page, the network and the device.

“A facade is a static element that looks similar to the embedded third-party, but is not functional and therefore much less taxing on the page load.”

Chrome for Developers, on chat widgets and other embeds

Google’s guidance names chat widgets among the embeds a facade suits: a look-alike button that loads the real chat when someone clicks it. The trade-off it notes is that the bubble appears when the real widget has loaded. Responsiveness is where heavy scripts show up: web.dev counts an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less as good.

Measure yours

  1. 1 Run PageSpeed Insights three times with the chat on and three with it off, and compare Total Blocking Time. Lab numbers move within minutes; the field data at the top covers the last 28 days.
  2. 2 In Chrome DevTools, open Network, filter by the chat tool’s domain and see whether its files start before or after the red load-event line.
  3. 3 If a speed plugin delays JavaScript until the visitor interacts, such as WP Rocket’s Delay JavaScript execution, the chat appears on the first scroll or tap. That suits a chat button. Keep a cookie banner out of it.

What Builderify’s chat loads

The Builderify plugin prints a small loader that waits for the page’s load event and an idle moment before it fetches the widget. The live connection a chat needs is a separate file, fetched only when a visitor starts or resumes a chat. These are the same files measured in the WordPress plugin audit, on 15 October 2026.

The files Builderify's chat loads, when, and their size before and after compression
File When it loads Size, kB Sent, kB
Loader bdf-connect.js With the page, then waits for the load event and an idle moment 2.6 1.2
Widget core bdf-core-….js After the load event, when the browser is idle; cached for a year 253.8 54.5
Live chat connection bdf-pusher.js Only when a chat connects 62.1 18.7

kB = 1,000 bytes; “sent” is the compressed transfer. Each block you switch on adds its own small file. The cookie consent and A/B testing tags, if you use them, load before the page instead, because they have to.

07 / Who answers

Who answers the chat,
and what happens when nobody can?

A chat box is a promise. Someone who opens it expects a reply in minutes, and a chat left unanswered does more harm than no chat at all. Before you switch one on, decide three things: the hours someone is watching, what the chat says outside them, and how you hear about a new chat when you’re away from the desk.

Illustration · one way to cover a day. Pick hours you can keep.
How each live chat tool lets you answer away from your desk, and what visitors see when nobody is online
Tool Answer from When nobody is online
tawk.to Free apps for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows An offline form by default. Messages land in the Inbox, and in your email once you turn on Mail Notifications. Hiding the chat when everyone is offline is a setting, off by default.
Tidio Free mobile and desktop apps An offline form that always asks for an email and can’t be switched off; Tidio emails you five minutes later if nobody has replied. Operating hours start on Starter.
Crisp Free iOS and Android apps A contact form, and working hours, on the free plan.
LiveChat Web, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android apps Its ticketing includes a contact form.
Builderify The browser: you’re online while Manage › Live Chat is open. No phone app; Telegram alerts for new chats and messages. New chat blocks hide while nobody is online. Switch that off and an offline message replaces the welcome; visitors can still write, and see your reply when they come back in the same browser. A Callbacks block takes a phone number instead.
01

Hours you can keep

Four staffed hours you always cover beat twelve you sometimes do. Post them in the chat’s welcome message.

02

An honest offline message

Say when you’ll reply, in the visitor’s terms: “We’re back at 9 tomorrow, UK time.” Then keep the promise.

03

An email before they go

If you can’t reply now, you need a way to reply later. Ask for an email in the offline form, or before the chat starts.

04

A bot for the repeats

Opening hours, delivery times and prices are the same answer every day. An AI chatbot can take those, and leave the rest for a person.

Would a phone call settle it faster? When a call-me-back button beats live chat, and what to ask for.

08 / Privacy

Is live chat GDPR-compliant?
The tool can be. Your setup decides.

A chat is personal data. The European Commission’s own examples include a name, an email address, an IP address and a cookie ID, and visitors type more besides. That doesn’t make chat a problem; it means a few things need settling first. General information, not legal advice.

  1. 01

Name it in your privacy notice

Say which chat company you use, what it collects (messages, name, email, IP address), why, and for how long you keep it.

  2. 02

    Have a processing agreement

The chat company processes the data for you. tawk.to publishes a data processing addendum on its site, Tidio sends one when you email support with the subject “DPA”, and Crisp lists one on every plan.

  3. 03

    Know where it is stored

tawk.to says it does all processing in the United States. Tidio stores data in the EEA. Crisp keeps messages in the Netherlands. Name the place, and the transfer safeguards, if it is outside the EU.

  4. 04

Mind what loads before anyone chats

Storage that isn’t strictly necessary needs consent first. The UK regulator says the rules apply to “any other type of technology” that stores information on a device, so local storage counts as well as cookies.

  5. 05

    Delete on a schedule

tawk.to keeps chats “indefinitely until deletion”, and Builderify keeps them until you delete them. Pick a period you can defend, and clear old conversations.

  6. 06

Ask for little, and say so

A name and an email at most. Tell visitors not to send card numbers or health details in the chat, and answer access and deletion requests by finding the conversation by email.

What each chat stores in the visitor’s browser

Cookies and browser storage each live chat tool sets, and how to hold them back until consent
Tool What it stores Holding it back
tawk.to Cookies such as tawk_uuid_*, twk_idm_key and TawkConnectionTime, one kept for 6 months, and a token in local storage. Without a consent form they are set as soon as the widget loads. Turn on its visitor consent form: then “cookies and local storage data will not be set until a visitor agrees by submitting the form.”
Tidio “Cookies are not used under normal conditions”: Tidio keeps widget data and chat history in local storage instead. No wait-for-consent setting is documented. To hold it back, load its script only after the visitor accepts in your cookie banner.
Crisp Cookies with the crisp-client prefix, kept for 6 months by default; CRISP_COOKIE_EXPIRE shortens that. Total Privacy Mode, under Chatbox Settings › Chatbox Security, sets no cookie until the visitor has interacted with the chatbox.
Builderify No cookie for the chat. When a visitor starts one, a conversation key goes into local storage so the chat can resume; the widget also keeps a few display-rule values there. Messages, name and email if you ask, IP address and browser are kept on Builderify until you delete the conversation. The chat key is written only when the visitor clicks Start Chat. User Journey, if you switch it on, sets its own first-party cookies and can wait for cookie consent (off by default).

From each vendor’s help centre on 16 October 2026; LiveChat is left out because its widget’s storage wasn’t on the pages we read. Whichever cookie banner you run, check that the chat waits for it when it should.

09 / With Builderify

Builderify’s live chat on WordPress,
gaps included.

Builderify Live Chat is a block in the floating widget that the Builderify plugin puts on every public page. Visitors chat in the widget; you answer from Manage › Live Chat in your dashboard, where messages arrive over a live connection. Each new conversation is 1 credit and messages are free; the widget’s page loads are 10 credits per 1,000, all from 250 free credits a month.

It earns its place when chat is one of several jobs on the page. The same tag can run an AI chatbot that answers from your own pages, a call-back form for when nobody is in, a cookie banner and popups, from one balance of credits. If chat is the only job and your team answers from their phones, a tool with a mobile app suits you better.

Each person after the first who answers chats is 250 credits, once. Hiding “Powered by Builderify” is 1,500 credits, once per website. Packs start at $9 for 1,000 credits and never expire; the full rate card is on the pricing page.

What it does

  • Real-time chat that picks up where the visitor left off, in the same browser
  • A welcome message, and an offline message for when nobody is online
  • Only show when an agent is online, on for new chat blocks, hides the chat while nobody is there
  • An optional name-and-email form before the chat that adds the visitor to a lead list, once they confirm by email
  • Telegram alerts for new chats and new messages, through a bot you create
  • Every conversation kept until you delete it; search by name or email; close and reopen
  • Show it on some pages only, on mobile or desktop, or to new or returning visitors

Not yet, or know this first

  • You count as online only while the Live Chat screen is open in your dashboard
  • No mobile app and no email alerts; Telegram is how you hear about chats away from the screen
  • Text only, up to 2,000 characters a message: no file attachments, canned replies, chat assignment or transcript export
  • Without the name-and-email form, an offline visitor sees your reply only if they come back in the same browser
  • The chat screen shows the visitor’s name, email and IP address, not the page they are reading or their path through your site
  • WhatsApp and Messenger are link buttons in the widget; those conversations stay in their own apps
  • The plugin isn’t in the WordPress.org directory yet: it is a download from your dashboard
When credits run out

The widget pauses until you top up or the next month’s 250 free credits arrive, and the chat goes with it. The cookie banner keeps running.

The AI chatbot, alongside

It answers from pages of your site and answers you write into its knowledge, in the same widget, and says so when it doesn’t know. Its Talk to a person instead link flags the conversation for your team, with the visitor’s email if they gave one; it doesn’t open a live chat. Answers are billed on each answer’s model cost. The AI chatbot for WordPress guide prices it.

For when nobody is in

The Callbacks block asks for a name, a phone number and a preferred day and time window, in the visitor’s time zone. The widget’s Message Us form puts messages in your Builderify Inbox, with no WordPress email to get lost (why WordPress form emails go missing); replying from it needs your own verified sending domain. When a call-back beats chat.

Which live chat should a WordPress site use?

If

Your team answers from their phones, and the vendor’s logo doesn’t bother you.

Pick

tawk.to. Free with no cap on agents, chats or history, and free apps for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. You pay only for add-ons, such as removing its branding.

If

You want WhatsApp and Messenger in one inbox, and your volume is small.

Pick

Tidio’s free plan, while you stay under 50 conversations a month. Past that you can’t reply until the quota resets, so budget for Starter at $24.17 a month billed yearly.

If

Two of you answer, and you’d like your data hosted in the EU.

Pick

Crisp’s free plan: two seats, unlimited conversations, messages stored in the Netherlands. Its WordPress plugin hasn’t been tested with the last three WordPress releases, so you may prefer to paste Crisp’s code with WPCode.

If

Chat is one of several jobs on the page: popups, a cookie banner, an AI chatbot.

Pick

Builderify. One plugin and one tag for all of them, paid in credits from 250 free a month. You answer in the browser, with Telegram alerts; there is no phone app yet.

If

You’re on WordPress.com’s Free plan.

Pick

A WhatsApp or Messenger link. The Free plan can’t run a chat script, but a button can link to a chat app on any plan. The Messenger chat plugin guide explains m.me links.

Questions

Live chat on WordPress, before you ask.

Install a free chat tool's plugin under Plugins › Add New Plugin, or paste the tool's code into a snippets plugin such as WPCode. tawk.to's free plan has no cap on agents, chats or history; Tidio's free plan allows 50 conversations a month and Crisp's two seats. The Builderify plugin adds live chat from 250 free credits a month, at 1 credit per new chat plus 10 per 1,000 page loads.

On a self-hosted site, yes: add a wp_footer hook to your child theme's functions.php that prints the chat tool's code. It works on classic and block themes. Never edit the parent theme, because its next update removes the change. On WordPress.com you need a plugin either way, since script tags only work once a paid plan's hosting features are activated.

Yes, on any paid plan. WordPress.com allows plugins on Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce, and script tags work once hosting features are activated, which installing your first plugin does. The Free plan can't run a chat script, so link to WhatsApp or Messenger from a button instead. Personal is $4 a month billed yearly, or $9 monthly (checked 16 October 2026).

A little. A chat widget is third-party JavaScript that downloads, connects to the vendor and runs on every page it is on, so when it starts matters most. A script that waits until the page has loaded, or a look-alike button that loads the real chat on click, barely affects how fast the page appears. Compare PageSpeed Insights runs with the chat on and off.

Yes. tawk.to says its live chat is free forever, with no limit on agents, conversations or chat history, and free apps for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. It charges for add-ons: removing the "Powered by tawk.to" branding ($29 a month on its add-ons page; $348 a year or $39 billed monthly in its help centre), AI Assist beyond its free tier, and hired agents at $1 an hour.
