Squarespace live chat
Squarespace has no chat button.
Your visitors
still have questions.
Squarespace has no live chat of its own, so you add a chat tool. On the Core, Plus or Advanced plan, paste the tool’s script into Pages, Custom Code, Code Injection and save; any chat works, and several are free. The Basic plan has no code injection, so there you need a chat that installs as a Squarespace Extension, such as LiveChat, which is paid, or a button that opens a chat app. Below: what each plan allows, the steps for version 7.1 and 7.0, a checker for the code you are about to paste, free chats compared, and Builderify Live Chat, which costs nothing for a small site.

Does Squarespace have live chat?
No. Here are the three ways to add it.
Squarespace has contact forms and email campaigns but no chat for your visitors; its forum’s answers all point to third-party tools. The chat button on Squarespace’s own site is its customer support, not a feature for yours.
-
01Core, Plus, Advanced
Paste a chat script
Any chat tool, free ones included. Its script goes in Code Injection once and appears on every page.
Most choice, most free options.
-
02Depends on the app
Install an Extension
A chat app from Squarespace’s Extensions marketplace, connected from Settings. LiveChat documents one; it is a paid tool. Check the app supports your plan.
The no-code route, where it is offered.
-
03Every plan
Link to a chat app
A Button block that opens WhatsApp, Messenger or your phone. Visitors leave your site to talk, and nothing appears in a bubble.
Free, but not chat on your site.
The old Facebook Messenger chat plugin is not an option any more: Meta discontinued it in May 2024. It is on the shutdown tracker, with the other tools that went.
Which Squarespace plans
can run a live chat?
Squarespace’s help centre puts code injection on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy plans. On Basic, the code blocks you can use don’t run scripts, so a chat tool’s snippet has nowhere to go.
Not sure which you are on? Look for Code Injection in the Custom Code menu. If it is there, a chat script will work.
| Plan | Chat script | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | No | A chat Extension that supports Basic, a link to a chat app, or Core for any chat. |
| Core | Yes | Any chat tool through Code Injection. |
| Plus | Yes | Any chat tool through Code Injection. |
| Advanced | Yes | Any chat tool through Code Injection. |
| Older plans | Some | Check for Code Injection in the Custom Code menu. |

How to add live chat to Squarespace
with code injection.
The same five steps work for every chat tool. Header code goes into the <head> of every page and footer code just before the closing </body>; use whichever your chat tool’s instructions name.
-
1
Copy your chat tool’s snippet
In the chat tool, find its install code, usually under Settings, Installation or Website. Copy all of it, from <script> to </script>.
-
2
Open Code Injection
On version 7.1: Pages › Custom Code › Code Injection. On version 7.0: Settings › Advanced › Code Injection (under Website Tools on some 7.0 sites).
-
3
Paste it into Header or Footer
Use the field the tool tells you to. Builderify’s goes in Header; Tidio’s instructions say Footer. Leave anything already there in place, unless it is an old chat you are replacing.
-
4
Save, then check in a private window
Click Save, open your site in a private browser window and look for the bubble on two or three pages, and on your phone.
-
5
Send yourself a test chat
Start a chat as a visitor and answer it from the chat tool, so you know where messages arrive before a customer sends one.
Only on some pages
Each page has its own Page Header Code Injection: Pages, the page’s gear icon, Advanced. On 7.1, Squarespace advises against HTML there, since it can disappear with header transparency.
Not on checkout
Squarespace says checkout pages don’t support code, so the chat won’t show during checkout.
You are on your own with code
Squarespace support doesn’t help with custom code or fix problems it causes; your chat tool’s support does.
Check your chat code
before it goes on your site.
Pick your plan and version, then paste the snippet you are about to add, or everything already in your Code Injection fields. It says whether your plan can run it, where it goes, and whether an old or second chat is hiding in there. Nothing leaves your browser.
Paste it under Pages › Custom Code › Code Injection.
- tawk.to
- Facebook Messenger Chat Plugin
- Facebook Messenger Chat Plugin no longer works. Remove its code.
- Paste it into the field tawk.to’s instructions name, Header or Footer, and save.
Free live chat for Squarespace:
what each one gives you.
Every one of these installs through Code Injection, so all of them need Core or above. The full nine-tool comparison, with chat history and what each free plan leaves out, is in the free live chat plans guide.

Free live chat for Squarespace,
in the same snippet as everything else.
Builderify Live Chat is a block in the floating widget that one Header snippet adds to every page. Each new conversation is 1 credit, messages are free, and the widget’s page loads are 10 credits per 1,000, all from 250 free credits a month. A small Squarespace site with a few dozen chats and a few thousand visits a month stays inside them.
The same snippet can carry an AI chatbot for the questions you answer every day, and popups Squarespace can’t do on its own.
What it does
- Real-time chat, resumed where the visitor left off
- The page each chat started on, and whether the visitor is still there
- Hides itself when nobody on your team is online, if you choose
- An offline message when you are away, if you leave it showing
- An optional name-and-email form that adds the visitor to a lead list
- Alerts on Telegram for new chats and messages
- Show it only on some pages, devices or for new visitors
Know this first
- You count as online only while the Live Chat screen is open in your dashboard
- No mobile app and no email alerts: connect Telegram to hear about chats
- No canned replies, chat assignment or file attachments yet
- Offline messages are answered in the widget, not by email
- Needs Core or above, like every script-based chat
The widget shows “Powered by Builderify”. If the credit balance runs out, it pauses until you top up; packs start at $9, once.
You are on Basic and don’t want to upgrade.
A chat with a Squarespace Extension, such as LiveChat, or a Button block linking to WhatsApp or your phone.
You want a free chat with your whole team on it, and don’t mind the vendor’s logo.
tawk.to. Unlimited agents and chats for free; the logo is a $29 a month add-on to remove.
You answer chats yourself, from your desk, and want chat, popups and an FAQ bot from one snippet.
Builderify Live Chat. 1 credit a conversation from 250 free credits a month. If you need to answer from your phone, pick a tool with a mobile app.
Squarespace live chat, before you ask.
No. Squarespace has contact forms and email campaigns but no chat for your visitors, so you add a third-party chat tool. The chat on Squarespace's own website is its customer support, not a feature you can add to yours.
To paste a chat tool's script you need code injection, which Squarespace's help centre lists on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy plans. The Basic plan has no code injection, so there you need a chat app from Squarespace Extensions that supports your plan, or a button linking to a chat app.
Copy your chat tool's install snippet, then in Squarespace open Pages, Custom Code, Code Injection on version 7.1, or Settings, Advanced, Code Injection on 7.0. Paste it into the Header or Footer field your chat tool names, save, and check the bubble appears in a private window and on your phone.
tawk.to is free for unlimited agents and chats, with its branding shown. Tidio's free plan allows 50 chats a month and Zoho SalesIQ's 100. Builderify Live Chat charges 1 credit per new conversation from 250 free credits a month, with messages free, but you are online only while its dashboard is open and alerts come through Telegram rather than a mobile app.
Squarespace's help centre says checkout pages don't support code, so a chat added through code injection doesn't appear during checkout. It still shows on your other pages, including order confirmation pages.
